The object of the Club shall be to celebrate the genius of the poet Robert Burns and to study his Life and Works.
|
Cupar Burns Club was Instituted in 1884 and Federated to the Robert Burns Federation in 1893.
Over the years the club has encouraged the study of the works of the Poet through the annual local Schools Competitions and supporting the National Competitions held under the auspices of the Burns Federation.
Since 1894, the club has held Anniversary Dinners in celebration of the birth of the poet. The first of these Anniversary Dinners was held on 25th January 1894. Notable exceptions occurred in 1900 when the Dinner was abandoned on the occasion of the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry departing to South Africa for action against the Boers and again in 1901 as a mark of respect on the death of Queen Victoria. Dinners were not held from 1915 to 1919 and also from 1940 to 1946, during the two world wars.
As a result of our Anniversary Dinner and other events, such as our St. Andrewstide Ceilidh, we have raised substantial sums for local and national charities and worthy causes. |
Last year as a result of our collection for worthy causes and the St Andrewstide Draw, your Committee has been able to make donations as follows:
National Burns Memorial Homes.......................................£200
Macmillan Cancer Support.....................................£200
St Andrews Hospital Kidney Dialysis Unit...........................................£200
Fife Carers...............................£200
RNLI Anstruther.......................£200
Kilmaron School......................£200
Scottish Charity Air Ambulance...............................£200
Cupar Foodbank.....................£457
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
